Dr Richard Wheal

Rick Wheal is a sustainability and energy consultant for Ove Arup and Partners, with a passion for passive design and renewable energy technologies. He carried out the first studies into PV in Social Housing in the UK, shaping the drivers for the adoption of PV in the early 2000s. His research led on to the efficacy of passive design and renewable energy technologies at the University of Nottingham, leading to novel technologies which are now in production globally.

Rick’s role in Arup is one of seeking the best design solution for buildings and cities, enabling resource-efficiency to be ingrained from inception. He works closely with Clients to realise their sustainability aspirations in the built environment while engaging architects throughout the design process. In addition to this role, Rick assists start-up companies in the Cleantech arena and is active in European research.
